Kristian Ghedina enjoys the enviable position of strongest Italian downhill skier of modern times, except maybe for Zeno Colò, Olympic champ in 1952.

He won his first World Cup event in 1990, racing down the death-defying Tofane peaks on his home territory, at Cortina. He went on to another 11 victories in World Cup, including Wengen and Kitzbühel, along the way earning a couple of silver medals as well. He always dedicated his feats to his beloved mother, who had lost her life in a mountain canyon, when he was a young kid. Kristian had a fabulous career that made ski history, thanks also to his extraordinary sense of courage and his visceral passion for speed.

He always dedicated his feats to his beloved mother, who had lost her life in a mountain canyon, when he was a young kid. Kristian had a fabulous career that made ski history, thanks also to his extraordinary sense of courage and his visceral passion for speed. But his fatal attraction for risk taking, sometimes led to trouble.

One day in the late 1990s, when he found himself trailing Hermann Maier, Ghedina – on a bet – ended up facing a freestyle jump at supersonic speed. He landed on his head and fractured a vertebra, so saying good-by to what would have been his breakthrough season… In 2004, rather, he showed off a daring maneuver in the final jump of the Kitzbühel course, that became one of the most clicked Youtube videos. Kristian’s love affair with speed will continue to hit the headlines, for today he is car racer, who competes on par with former Formula 1 drivers.
