Giorgio’s first steps were on a pair of skis at home, in Livigno.
Giorgio Rocca has always lived in Livigno, Valtellina, the border outpost where he first put on a pair of skis. As a little boy, Giorgio had no use for taking orders, for having to make endless slalom and giant slalomruns in an effort to learn his art. He loved setting his own agenda, skiing in the fresh snow and in the woods, totally free of poles, gates and… restrictions.
No metaphor for the life of an athlete – by contrast all about going by the handbook and working eager-beaver style – his attitude revealed a sheer love of freedom. The same healthy passion, he’d now like to transmit to his three kids and to the small children who idolize him. He won a total of 11 World Cup slalom events, as well as 2 bronze medals at the World Championships in the same discipline. In 2006 Giorgio had a golden year.
That’s when the he had a string of five consecutive victories, winning the slalom title.Unfortunately, at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, after pronouncing the Olympic oath in front of a billion TV viewers and overcoming an enormous pressure, he got off the first slalom run. Since 2010 Giorgio has been coaching (also cooperating with Lara Gut) and directing the Giorgio Rocca Ski Academy, an high profile School dedicated to the ski addicted.
